We're About Family.
We're a small business based in Sturminster Newton in the heart of Dorset. There are no silent shareholders or shady investors at The Hatchery. We are one big family, working together towards a world where everyone can eat great food.
Meet Mr Mash & Family.
Mr Mash and his family have always been great lovers of tasty food but eleven years ago, his middle daughter, Daisy, was diagnosed with Coeliac disease, which presented a bit of a culinary challenge.
Finding that so many of her beloved foods were now off the menu, and realising how impossible it was for her to find foods to grab and go, Mr Mash set out to create a range of tasty savoury snacks.
He wanted to create savouries that were not only safe for coeliacs but so delicious that the whole of the Mash family could enjoy them together. He didn't want poor "Middle Mash" daisy to feel excluded!
Determined to use his culinary expertise to save coeliacs from second rate food, Mr Mash donned his pinny and set to work full time, his mission to “Start with taste and then make it gluten-free”.
The Egg Came First.
First came the eggs: his ‘Naughty Nippas’ and their big brothers, the ‘Whoppas’ went down a treat at gatherings amongst gluten free and non-gluten-free friends alike. Pretty soon people were asking him for orders and, in 2011, Hotch Potch Eggs was hatched.
On a roll now (so to speak), Mr Mash started experimenting with another of his daughter’s ‘forbidden foods’: pastry. With his top secret recipe perfected, the Mash family kitchen became a paradise for lovers of all things pastry, chock-full of tantalisingly tiddly pies, succulent sausage rolls, and tasty tarts and quiches.
Before long, Hotch Potch Pies was born, with their savoury snacks flying the ‘free-from’ flag. In 2013, the Mashes found themselves shaking hands with Anthony Worrall Thompson as their ‘Whoppas’ won the Food Service Award at London's Free From Food Awards.
Hotch Potch Makes It Big.
From here, the word spread, and in 2014, as the Mashes were touting their wares at DJ Chris Evans’ Carfest South, their piles of pies caught some discerning pairs of eyes. ‘Now I’m a flour man myself,’ claimed Paul Hollywood, ‘but your pies are DIVINE’. ‘One of the best I’ve ever tasted!’ chimed in Mary Berry, and there it was decided. Our humble Mr Mash had won the Best Professional Pie!
Following his win, Evans invited him onto his Radio 2 Breakfast Show special, ‘TFI Pieday’, where the whole studio team were stumped by his gluten-free feat. ‘I just can’t believe it’s gluten free!’ exclaimed Chris (himself a serious patron of pies). ‘It’s AMAZING!’
And so Mr Mash’s fate was set. His calling was the world of gluten free baking. And with a name like Mash, what possible occupation could be more fitting than baker of incredibly astonishing pies?
The Hatchery Today.
Hotch Potch has come on a long way since that first twinkle in Mr Mash's eye back in 2008. We are now a well established brand in the free from sector, with a growing list of lovely, loyal customers.
We believe that we have finally changed the game for gluten free savouries. Now there is a product out there that is not only suitable for coeliacs, but truly tempting to the wheat-loving masses as well!
Mr Mash's passion for pastry making is still going strong, and it doesn't look like its going to wane any time soon. He has even mastered the recipe for vegan pastry, to fill more hungry tummies!
Our products have becoming increasingly popular with critics. So popular, in fact, that they have won a number of awards recently:
